Diagnostic boundary
A diagnostic trouble code reports that a monitored test failed. It does not prove one specific part is bad, and manufacturer logic can add vehicle-specific conditions.
Do not replace parts from the code label alone. A DTC identifies the circuit, monitor, or system that failed a test; diagnosis still needs live data, freeze-frame data, wiring checks, and vehicle-specific service information.
Useful checks before replacing parts
- Confirm the monitor ran under valid conditions and check pending, permanent, and companion codes.
- Inspect sensor data, wiring, exhaust or EVAP leaks, fuel trims, and recent repairs before replacing emissions parts.
- Use the manufacturer test plan when the code depends on a readiness monitor.
