Diagnostic boundary
A diagnostic trouble code reports that a monitored test failed. It does not prove one specific part is bad, and manufacturer logic can add vehicle-specific conditions.
Do not replace parts from the code label alone. A DTC identifies the circuit, monitor, or system that failed a test; diagnosis still needs live data, freeze-frame data, wiring checks, and vehicle-specific service information.
Useful checks before replacing parts
- Review misfire counters and freeze-frame data to identify whether the fault is cylinder-specific or random.
- Check ignition parts, injector operation, compression, vacuum leaks, cam/crank data, and fuel quality.
- Avoid extended driving with an active misfire because catalyst damage can follow.
