Tune It

You're on the dyno. Set the fuel across the rev range, hit the pull and chase peak power. Too rich and you leave power on the table; too lean and it knocks — knock enough cylinders and the engine lets go. Read the feedback, adjust, beat your best.

How to win

Every RPM point has a hidden sweet-spot fuelling. Land on it and that part of the curve makes its best power. The dyno tells you what each cell did:

ideal nailed it · rich a little wasted, safe · lean down on power, getting risky · knock too lean — detonation.

Rich is safe but slow; lean is fast right up until it isn't. Nudge the lean cells up until they flip to ideal, and back off anything that knocks. Peak power almost always lands in the upper mid-range, where airflow is strong and the revs are climbing — that's the cell to perfect.

FAQ

Is this how real ECU tuning works?

It's a simplified take on the real idea: an engine makes best power at a particular air-fuel mixture, richening slightly for safety and cooling, and detonating if pushed too lean under load. Real tuning adds ignition timing, boost, knock sensors and a lot more — but the fuel-vs-power-vs-knock trade-off here is the heart of it.
