Diagnostic boundary
A diagnostic trouble code reports that a monitored test failed. It does not prove one specific part is bad, and manufacturer logic can add vehicle-specific conditions.
Do not assume poor fuel economy or rich operation is an oxygen-sensor issue before checking whether the engine warms up correctly.
Useful checks before replacing parts
- Check warm-up rate, thermostat operation, coolant level, coolant temperature sensor data, and intake-air temperature plausibility.
- Review freeze-frame data to see ambient temperature, runtime, vehicle speed, and load when the monitor failed.
- Inspect for a thermostat stuck open, biased temperature sensor, wiring issue, or cooling-system service problem.
