Diagnostic boundary
A diagnostic trouble code reports that a monitored test failed. It does not prove one specific part is bad, and manufacturer logic can add vehicle-specific conditions.
Do not replace the thermostat only because the code exists; a biased sensor, wiring problem, low coolant, or incorrect service history can point the diagnosis in a different direction.
Useful checks before replacing parts
- Compare scan-tool coolant temperature against ambient temperature after a cold soak.
- Check whether coolant temperature rises smoothly and reaches normal operating range.
- Inspect coolant level, thermostat operation, temperature-sensor data, wiring, and recent cooling-system work before replacing parts.
